~Crash

Sunday October 3, 2010 I experienced a violent crash with another cyclist while riding one of San Antonio's Greenway cycling/walking/running paths. I'm documenting what I recall before and after impact. Path was congested with folks walking dogs two and sometimes three abreast. Navigating around and through the traffic is and has been the downside of leveraging the Greenways for my cycling4fitness effort. Yesterday it was the worst I've been exposed to in over 5,000 miles of riding the paths. Passing left was my only option, (hindsight; I should have came to a complete stop before passing on left). After doing so the other cyclist I encountered had also been forced to pass left while traveling south (I was headed north). We both made effort to get back to our respective right side of path but didn't have enough time. The left side of my body from head to mid thigh took the impact of the other cyclist. I lay still not making a sound; my head, neck, shoulder and thigh was wailing in distress. The other cyclist was hollering in pain. I couldn't see him but I could hear his suffering. After what seemed like 5 minutes of being on the ground; a kind man and woman came to ask if I was OK. Till this point in time, I'm sure the focus was the other cyclist. The man indicated that my left ear was bleeding. I asked if blood was coming from inside of ear or around ear and learned it was around my ear. I was relieved coming to understand this. Finally, the kind spirited man asked me if there's anything he could do for me. I responded, "Yes, please help me get up to my feet". He extended his hand and pulled me up. At this point in time I'm able to gain a visual of the other cyclist, the bikes involved and the eye witnesses of my first ever cycling accident. An off duty nurse was kneeling down in front of the other cyclist holding his head steady. There was a discussion about the condition of the other cyclist. He was going to be OK but emergency professionals were in transit; his ultimate fate of the accident is unknown at this time. I suspect a broken clavicle; if not worse. I was approximately 1.5 - 2 miles from my apartment. I offered to exchange names with anyone who felt it would be prudent to do so. Those remaining on the scene and the other cyclist said it was an accident and not necessary; so I began the slow painful walk home. I'm thankful I was able to get back home, where I immediately call my boss who also logs a lot cycling miles. He aligns coverage for me as I'm lying low to recover at a minimum this scheduled work day. I asked him to check in on me every 2-3 hours as I'm just not sure how torn up my body is. A co-worker and his wife drop by to check on me after hearing of the accident. I telephoned Mom and my son, asking them to check in as well. Scary stuff!! Since the accident I've been in discussion with myself about how I'm going to alter my riding style and where I'm going to ride on Saturday's and Sunday's. The SA Greenways will not be seeing as much of me on the weekends. It's too congested with walking/running folk that don't understand the need to stay right to allow enough room for cyclist to pass safely on left.
